NORTH AMERICA is a continent and SOUTH AMERICA is a continent, but there IS NO continent named America! Look at a map - ANY MAP - and you will see this. America is the short name of the country whose full name is "The United States of America". How hard is this concept?

The Americas refers to the continent. There is a North and South America. North consisting of Canada/USA/Mexico (major countries), and South with Brazil/Chili and a few more (too many to remember this early). Named for Amerigo Vespucci, who "discovered" it and claimed it.
